Location: Halifax, N.S.
The Halifax Centre of Excellence is located at the meeting point between the wild forests and hills of Nova Scotia and the urban expanse of Halifax.
The WCE program is run out of the Park West School, where students explore and lead activities at nearby Belcher’s Marsh. Every year, elementary students participate in field trips to the marsh where older students act as mentors and guides. The school also participates in national WCE events, such as wetland webinars, and local conservation projects.
It is estimated that approximately 18% of the Halifax peninsula consisted of wetlands in the 1700s. Today, there are still smaller wetlands that remain in the region. Wetlands like Belcher’s Marsh provide habitat for wildlife, prevent flooding, filter and clean water, and provide astonishing natural beauty that can be enjoyed by all. Ducks Unlimited Canada is committed to providing education through the WCE program to teach about the value of these natural places and to foster stewardship for years to come.
